How to Play the FLAMES Game 📝
A step-by-step guide to the classic FLAMES paper game — and how to use our free calculator.
The FLAMES game is one of the most beloved school paper games of all time. All you need is a pen, paper, and two names — and you'll discover your relationship result in minutes! Whether you play the classic paper version or use our free FLAMES Calculator, the fun is the same. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is the FLAMES Game?
FLAMES is an acronym that stands for Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemy, and Siblings. It's a name compatibility game that uses a simple letter-counting algorithm to determine the "relationship" between two people. Generations of school students have played this game during lunch breaks, in class notebooks, and now — on their phones!
For the full meaning of each letter, see our page on what FLAMES stands for.
How to Play FLAMES on Paper — Step by Step
Write Both Names
Write your name and the other person's name on a piece of paper. You can use full names, first names only, or nicknames — try different combinations!
Remove Common Letters
Look for letters that appear in both names. For each common letter, cross it out once from each name. Important: you remove only one instance per match — not all occurrences.
Count the Remaining Letters
Count all the letters that are NOT crossed out in both names combined. This gives you your elimination number.
Write F L A M E S
Write the letters F, L, A, M, E, S on your paper with spaces between them.
Start Eliminating
Starting from F, count up to your number. The letter you land on gets crossed out. Then continue counting from the very next letter, wrapping around, until only one letter remains.
Read Your Result!
The surviving letter is your FLAMES result: F=Friends, L=Love, A=Affection, M=Marriage, E=Enemy, S=Siblings.
Worked Example
Example: Alex & Jamie
Step 1 — Clean names (letters only, lowercase):
alex | jamie
Step 2 — Find common letters:
"alex" has: a, l, e, x | "jamie" has: j, a, m, i, e
Common: a and e
After removal: "lx" + "jmi"
Step 3 — Count remaining:
lx = 2 letters, jmi = 3 letters. Total = 5
Step 4 — Eliminate from FLAMES with count 5:
F L A M E S → eliminate E → F L A M S
F L A M S → eliminate S → F L A M
F L A M → eliminate F → L A M
L A M → eliminate A → L M
L M → eliminate M → L
Result: L = Love ❤️
Tips & Variations
- Try different name formats (full name, nickname, surname) to see different results.
- Some players count spaces as letters — our calculator removes them for the classic version.
- Play with friends' names too — not just romantic interests!
- If you get a result you don't like, try swapping the name order.

Is the FLAMES Game Just for Fun?
Yes — and that's what makes it wonderful! FLAMES is a letter-counting game, not a scientific compatibility test. The same two names always give the same result because the algorithm is deterministic. Real relationship compatibility depends on communication, trust, shared values, and personal connection. Enjoy FLAMES as the lighthearted, nostalgic entertainment it is! 😊
